Dalai Lama : Celebrates 72nd Birthday

6 07 2007

dalailama1.jpg

The 14th Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) turns 72 today.

The spiritual leader who sought refuge in India has not set foot in his homeland for 48 years. This year he will be celebrating what is known as an obstacle birthday. According to the Tibetan beliefs an individual is likely to experience loss and suffering every 12 years.

The world’s oldest couple — a 103-year-old retired army soldier, Thakur Pyara Singh, and his 101-year-old wife Hansa Devi — have been invited to bless the Dalai Lama.

According to Tibetan custom, the blessings of old people wards off obstacles from a person’s life.

Join thousands in offering prayers and wishes to a man who has dedicated his life to promote the concepts of universal responsibility, secular ethics, and religious harmony.

Rama Setu : Man made or Natural, We must PROTECT IT!!!

2 06 2007

Construction of Rama SethuIf any of you have been following my older rants on the ram setu your well aware of the intentions of the Indian Government in implementiong Sethusamudram canal built between itself and Sri Lanka.

This means digging a big hole through the Rama Sethu Bridge and effectively destroying it. The economic benefits are said to be enormous but there are also high economic costs – estimated at hundreds of millions of Rupees which will probably escalate into billions by the time the project is completed.

The SOCIAL OVERHEAD COST of the offence caused to over 1 billion Hindus by destroying a traditional place of pilgrimage and worship will be immense.

In Hindu tradition, our entire environment is regarded as sacred and there are specific instances which provide important symbols for this. Witness the reverence Hinduism has for the great rivers – for example the sacred Ganga river – for their life giving and life sustaining qualities, the mountains which source these life giving forces and provide protection and indeed the whole land which is regarded as the Mother in addition to the regard for the millions of plants and animals.

The Rama Sethu land formation (also known as Adam’s Bridge), linking southern India to northern Sri Lanka, is an example of such a sacred symbol which is revered in Hindu tradition as the bridge constructed by Lord Rama and his army to cross into Lanka and defeat the demon Ravana.

Proper Education!

4 02 2007

1979 : Psychedelic gurus Pink Floyd – “Another Brick in the wall” is a track that made a mile stone in history.

Proper Education

2007 : Im not much of a house music fan but Eric Prydz track titled “Proper Education”, a remix of Floyds track has a thumbs up from me.

The track itself doesnt tickle my nuts but the concept, VIDEO and theme of the whole thing is brilliant!

Do stones float in water?

23 04 2006

Trust India to stir up some controversy! Modern science tells us that stones cannot float in water :-p For the island of Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, stones, it seems, do float in water. Difficult to believe-but it’s a reality.

Sun Salutation : Surya Namaskar

7 04 2005

suryanamaskar.jpgSuryanamaskar combines Yogasanas and Pranayama and brings about the general flexibility of the body preparing it for further Asanas and Pranayama. This is usually done both at sunrise and sunset, facing the Sun.

There are mainly 2 modes of performing Suryanamaskar. In one, there are 12 steps or counts and in the other only 10 in each round. Each stage of Suryanamaskar is accompanied by regulation of breath.

The 12 steps of the Suryanamaskar are as follows:

1. Stand erect with the legs together and palms together. Take the hands above the head and bend the trunk backwards. Here, inhale fully.

2. Bend the body to the bend and touch the knees by the forehead. Keep the palms on the floor on either side of the legs. Exhale fully.

3. In this stage, kick the right leg back, take the left knee forward, look up and inhale. Touch the thigh with the heel.

4. In the next step, take the left leg also back, resting only on palms and toes; keep the body straight from head to toes inclined to the ground at about 30 degree. Here exhale completely.
